[ACTA] Must Be Stopped!

Hey all, it’s been a while.  Lots of stuff to do and not so much time to blog these days, but this one is definitely important enough to merit the effort.  If you’re looking for one of my quasi-funny, tongue-in-cheek posts, check out the Third and 7 archives.  This one is serious.  Nonetheless, you should take the time to read it, and hopefully take action afterwards.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA for short) must be stopped.  I say this in all earnest, as a believer in freedom and equality for all citizens of the Earth, and as a believer in the Constitution of the United States of America and our Bill of Rights (that’s the first ten amendments to the Constitution, in case you forgot your high school Civics class).  Here, in brief (brief for me, anyway), is why:

Government-sponsored, corporate censorship of the internet not only violates our First Amendment Rights, it opens the door to a dangerous precedent that any citizen of a free and independent nation should greatly fear.  ACTA essentially gives Big Business an internationally-approved “blank check” to prosecute ISPs and website domain hosts for the actions of a few unscrupulous users.  This threat of multi-million dollar lawsuits and/or criminal prosecution in turn forces the ISPs/hosts to censor sites and cave to unconstitutional requests for private user data, all in the interest of “combating piracy”.  This is a grave threat to individual liberty and national sovereignty and must be stopped.

ACTA is unquestionably a tool for multi-million dollar, international corporations to protect their “rights” (a.k.a. profits).  This is shown in no uncertain terms by the following quotation:

“Apart from the participating governments, an advisory committee of large US-based multinational corporations was consulted on the content of the draft treaty, including the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and the International Intellectual Property Alliance (which includes the Business Software Alliance, Motion Picture Association of America, and Recording Industry Association of America).”

By ratifying ACTA into an international treaty, the governments of the world are effectively allowing these corporations to circumvent the laws of individual nations.  In other words, they can completely disregard the US Constitution and due process when going after alleged “pirates”.  The fact that our supposedly “free and independent” government would sign such a treaty proves just how much control these multi-national corporations and their SuperPACs truly have.

Social media and internet journalism are two major factors that enabled the oppressed majority to overthrow their totalitarian shackles in the Arab Spring last year.  If we, as a free people, give up the freedom of the internet in order to protect the special interests of Big Business, we open the door to an unprecedented (in this country) level of totalitarianism.  We are, essentially, throwing away our ability to decide if and when our government, supposedly “of the people, by the people, and for the people”, has become “destructive of [Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness].”  Our Founding Fathers proclaimed these “certain unalienable rights” to be self-evident, and in the Constitution free speech is entrusted to us as one of the most important tools by which we ensure those rights aren’t infringed by an increasingly totalitarian government.  The justification behind this thinking is laid out in the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, specifically in this passage:

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.  But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.  Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.

Indeed, the entire point of our Constitution and Bill of Rights is to prevent the government set up by the Continental Congress from one day becoming another “King George”; they wanted to protect their investment, as it were.  We, the people, are that investment, and Big Business has no right to take that away from us in the interest of protecting their own status quo, or for any other reason.  If we freely give Big Business the power to influence our government and skew all the rules in their favor, we cease to have a free, elective democracy as well as a truly free market economy, two of the corner stones this nation was founded upon.

The internet itself is an extension of this basic freedom.  What will become of it (and our voice) if Big Business is given the wherewithal by our government to indiscriminately censor, prosecute, and persecute anything or anyone it perceives as being counter to its interests – interests which, as we’ve seen time and again, go against the basic rights and freedoms of the American people, and the vast majority of the (dare I say it?) “99%” the world over.

Baseball In Seattle…

One of the two shoes have dropped in Marinerville.  We didn’t get Prince.  Which should not surprise anyone really.  Why would a player coveted by half the teams in the league uproot his family, move to Southwest Alaska, and not play for a team that cares about winning?

I flipped on sports radio this afternoon and couldn’t believe what I was hearing.  Seattle fans are “glad we didn’t sign Prince for 9 years.”

You are all morons.  Stop drinking the Kool-Aid the M’s have been feeding you and have some fucking pride.  Good lord you are embarrassing yourselves.  You are the same idiots wanting us to “Suck for Luck.”  Just keep rooting for your teams to lose and not get better with false hopes for the future.  I’ll be over here watching and rooting for my teams to actually win.  These intellectual hipsters have officially pissed me off to no end.

Jack Z was on the radio all week talking about how we are a young team and we can’t have high expectations.  If we are such a young team and aren’t going to win for another 2 plus years… trade Felix already.  What’s the point of keeping him when you have young talented pitchers coming up and don’t have the bats to score any runs.  You obviously can get a package of young, position players back that will be ready to play with the Danny Holtzens of the organization.

The Mariners won’t trade Felix.  For the same reasons they didn’t trade Ichiro and signed him to 18 million dollars a year.  This team is run by the marketing department.

For the reasons above and thousands more… I’m rooting for the Texas Rangers.  Here’s 7 reasons why…

1)  Their uniforms don’t include the popular and annoying color navy.  Every boring team in the league has added navy to their uniforms.  It’s fascist.

2)  They have Nolan Ryan calling the shots.  He was my childhood idol.  I still have over 300 of his baseball cards alone.

3)  They give a shit.  I think this has been explained in enough detail.

4)  They are in the AL West.  I’ll have plenty of chances to see them live.

5)  I won’t have false promises and lies about how they are “really doing the best they can guys.”

6)  I already own a Rangers hat from my little league coaching days.  Yep, I’m a cheap bastard.

7)  They score runs.  If I see another season of 1-0 losses I’ll never stop vomiting.

I would happily jump back on the Mariners band wagon under one condition.  New ownership.  How about this guy?


I’m Calling Out The Seattle Mariners

This offseason is going to determine whether I divorce the Mariners for good.  Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times described how the Mariners are at a cross roads and need to decide between two plans moving forward.  Basicly these are the two options.

1)       Overpay for Prince Fielder plus a few other pieces and make the team competitive right now.

2)      Rebuild completely, trade Felix and play another year or two with the younger guys.

Neither plan in my opinion is wrong and either one can be debated to exhaustion.  I completely agree with Geoff’s assessment of the team and am willing to take it a step or two further.

If the Mariners continue to try to “rebuild while trying to remain competitive” I will divorce the Mariners.  Done, Fin, Out the damn door gone.

I’m tired of this team’s lack of direction and pseudo commitment to winning.  This team needs an identity and direction.  I will support the team in it’s decision as long as THEY HAVE THE BALLS TO MAKE ONE.  this mishmash of young guys with over the hill veterans has got to stop.  I just read a rumor that we’d go after Nick Swisher.  F**** that.  That is exactly the short sighted, band-aid placing I won’t tolerate.

My bags are packed Mariners.  Get your house in order and show the fans what matters.  Pick a side or continue to lose your fan base.

ESPN Must Be Stopped

ESPN employs a ton of on air talent.  They are paid to share thoughts and opinions on a national medium.  Have you ever paid attention to these guys?  These are the ones who really really really piss me off and why.

1)  Colin Cowherd – This asshole is out of control. He grew up on the Washington Coast and has bashed the Northwest every chance he’s been given.

Q:  “Hey Colin, what do you think of the UNLV Basketball team?”
A:  “I don’t know but thank God Seattle lost the Sonics, Tuba Man and Dave Neihaus! That place can burn in Hell, I should know, I lived there.”

Coward also spends all his time trying to explain how f*cking smart he is. I go out of my way to avoid his high-pitched voice.

2)  Skip Bayless – Skip get’s paid to say dumb things on purpose in order to make people angry He’s damn good at his job.

3)  Woody Paige – Woody isn’t a real person. He’s a cartoon character. I used to watch “Around the Horn” when I was in college and spent the whole half hour screaming “SHUT THE F*CK UP! SHUT UP, SHUT SHUT SHUT UP!!” until PTI came on. I’ve calmed down…

4)  Ron Jawarski – When talking about the National Football League, I like to listen to people who use the same damn clichés over and over while also using 1,000 adjectives when 1 will do. He’s the furthest thing from an analyst. He is trying to out “John Madden” John Madden.

5)  Steven A Smith – Steven A is an angry man. Nobody understands why. Doesn’t he have his dream job? He has been given multiple chances to have a syndicated radio show on 710 AM in Seattle but the public got him off the air here….twice. Brock and Salk have had him on their show and you can tell they are only doing it because they are contractually obligated.  Afterwards Salk said, “say what you want about Steven…” which actually translates to “Steven is an egotistical dick and everyone knows it but…”

6)  Merrell Hodge – This dick with ears needs a smaller tie. Look at his tie and tell me you remember anything he says.

7)  Herm Edwards – Herm (You Play…To Win…The Game!) had one YouTube worthy moment and he’s trying to make a career out of it.  He did get a beer commercial out of it.  He’s a joke doesn’t understand that he’s considered a serious analyst. ESPN uses him as THE ZANY COACH WHO CAN SAY ANYTHING AT ANY TIME! HE’S SO UNFILTERED! Vomit.

This list started with 30 people.  I’m not kidding.  So who makes you change the channel or start screaming at the TV uncontrollably?

Seahawks vs Falcons

I have no real hatred towards the Falcons and I think this will be a closely contested game. If it was in Atlanta, we’d be dicked. The only analysis I’ll give is that I hope Mike Smith continues to force Matt Ryan to throw 50 passes a game. Ryan is going to get sacked more than Cutler at this pace. Anyway, I will instead use this post to rip my underachieving fantasy football team. Oh, the Falcon’s owner looks looks like a mobster from Dick Tracy.

To the members of “Zombie Al Davis”,

You 0-3 assholes quit on me faster than the Raiders quit on the real Al Davis! I am calling you out right now. You cost me $10 and I’ve got a kid on the way so my wife is going to be so pissed!

Jamaal Charles – Who the hell do you think you are? You got your ass kicked to injured reserve by the Lions mascot! I can’t believe I wasted my 2nd overall pick on such a pansy… Thanks for putting me out of my misery in week 2.

Matt Schaub – Just because I picked you late in the draft doesn’t mean you have to suck so bad. You can, you know, audible into a pass play once in a while. Houston scored 34, 23, and 33 points this season. You didn’t do sh*t. Thats not mathematically possible. Don’t make me consider starting Kevin Kolb… please

Andre Johnson – I have no beef with you. If you can just punch Schaub in the face for me that would be great.

DeSean Jackson – 7 Points a game isn’t going to cut it. I will trade you for a mid-level running back if I can find someone dumb enough to take your over-rated ass.

Tim Hightower – You were my “sleeper.” I had no real interest in starting you, ever. But keep it up. And if Roy Helu takes your job I will cut you. And not from my team.

Felix Jones – You are the definition of underachieving. Stop being listed as questionable.

Greg Jennings – If you weren’t a member of the Packers I would have never drafted you. Stop being such a team player and get in the end zone.

Josh Brown – Good job not being a “slave to the business man.” Idiot.

Saints Defense – I deserve what I get for picking you.
