In Cinemas…X-Men: First Class

Some of you may have noticed that we have entered the Summer Movie Season; with recent releases such as Thor, Pirates 4 and The Hangover 2, we are in for one busy summer! This weekend marks the return of The X-Men to the big screen. It’s been 5 years since Brett Ratner took a dump on the once prominent franchise with X-Men: The Last Stand. It’s been 2 years since the promising yet overall letdown of X-Men Origins: Wolverine broke our hearts. Now we get another reboot to add to the movie world…but this time, it’s for the best.

X-Men: First Class takes us back to when Charles and Erik were just buddies; hanging out, playing chess, talking about women. They have not yet become the bald wheelchair bound leader and metal bending foe that we have come to know. This relationship is what makes First Class work; the chemistry between the 2 stars is truly believable and you feel for the characters. Michael Fassbender is a revelation as the man who becomes Magneto. Everytime he is on screen you are drawn to him, his presence takes over. It also helps that the entire driving force of First Class is the origin story of Magneto, which gives us some awesome 007-Dr. No era type filmgoing. I read a quote from Matthew Vaughn, director, and he stated that First Class was “his Bond Movie”. I totally agree.

Without delving too much into the film I can tell you this: You have 5 X-Men films in the world of cinema now, and First Class ranks #2 behind X2. First Class is a fantastic summer moviegoing adventure and it leaves us with the prospect of future films makes me excited to see how they rebuild the universe. Enjoy catching the 3 cameos and numerous tongue in cheek moments. And fall in love with Michael Fassbender just like Matthew Swartz.

Overall Grade: B+
